Utility Superintendent for the Village of Cortland
- The Village of Cortland Utilities Superintendent is a full time year round salaried position with paid holidays. Starting salary for this position is $41,600 and may be negotiable based on prior experience.
- The Utilities Superintendent shall be generally responsible for the day to day operation, security, maintenance, upkeep & repair of all municipally owned utilities & municipally owned buildings & property. Essential job areas include, but are not limited to, the Village Water System, Sewer System, Streets & Parks & the burn site.
- The new hire must obtain Grade 4 Water Operator’s License & Class L Waste Water License and Pesticide license within the 6 month introductory period.
- Applicants must have a high school diploma, or equivalent, basic computer knowledge, as well as the ability to maintain and operate machinery and lift up to 50 lbs. often, occasionally up to 100 lbs.
- Employees are subject to background checks, drug testing and DOT physical.
- The Utilities Superintendent reports to the Cortland Village Board of Trustees.

Job Description for Utilities Superintendent
Village of Cortland, Nebraska
The Utilities Superintendent shall be generally responsible for the day to day operation, maintenance, upkeep and repair of all municipally owned utilities, and municipally owned buildings and property. Essential job functions for each specific area are as follows:
Water System
- Daily operation, maintenance, repair and security of the Municipal Water System.
- All water testing as required by the State of Nebraska and compliance with orders issued by the State of Nebraska.
- Tapping of all municipally owned water mains.
- Working with the Village Engineer for the purpose of making recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding system upgrades, repairs and extensions.
- Making application and securing approval for funding in the form of grants of loans to assist in financing system upgrades, repairs and extensions.
- Maintain maps and records of all water system updates and changes.
- Making recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding appropriate rate structures and regulations.
Sewer System
- Daily operation, maintenance, repair and security of the Municipal Sewer System.
- All wastewater testing as required by the State of Nebraska and compliance with orders issued by the State of Nebraska.
- Working with the Village Engineer for the purpose of making recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding system upgrades, repairs and extensions.
- Making application and securing approval for funding in the form of grants or loans to assist in financing system upgrades, repairs and extensions.
- Maintain maps and records of all sewer system updates and changes.
- Making recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding appropriate rate structures and regulations.
Streets
- Oversight of all platted streets, alleys and roadways within the corporate limits for which the Municipality is responsible.
- Minor repair of municipal streets.
- Repair and maintenance of street lights and signage.
- Snow removal and tree trimming.
- Supervising curb cuts and excavations on municipal streets.
- Coordinate street cleaning approximately every other year.
- Maintain maps and records of all street updates and changes
- Working with the Village Engineer for the purpose of developing the annual One and Six Year Plans.
Municipally Owned Buildings
- Maintenance, upkeep, repair and security of municipally owned buildings designated by the Board of Trustees.
- Making recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding necessary repairs and improvements to said buildings.
Municipal Properties
- Maintenance and upkeep of all municipally owned properties such as parks, grounds, right-of-ways, Homestead Trail, and Village Burn Site.
- Mosquito treatment
Zoning Administration
- Review of all building permit applications regarding compliance with zoning and subdivision regulations.
- Making recommendations to the Board of Trustees regarding approval or denial of building permit applications.
Zoning Administration
- Impound dogs as allowed by Village Ordinance.
- On call for maintenance emergencies.
- Provide written Maintenance report to the Board of Trustees on a weekly basis and attend the monthly board meeting.
- Hire and supervise seasonal part-time help.
- On Call for maintenance emergencies within a 30 minute response time.
The Utilities Superintendent shall have all other responsibilities as directed by the Board of Trustees.
